A megbontott demokratikus rend és a sérült emberi jogok visszaállítása áll a Biden–Harris-elnökség külpolitikájának központjában – írja a Klubrádió kérdésére adott válaszában Ned Price külügyi szóvivő annak kapcsán, hogy a minisztérium kiadta éves jelentését – immár a negyvenötödiket – az emberi jogok nemzetközi helyzetéről. Benne minden országnak külön, terjedelmes fejezetet szentel.

A magyar kormánnyal folytatott hivatalos tárgyalásaink részét képezi ezeknek a kérdéseknek újbóli felvetése, illetve az, hogy tartsa meg Magyarország vállalt nemzetközi kötelezettségeit – írta a többi között Ned Price külügyi szóvivő. – Emellett a nyilvánosság előtt is kifejezte az Egyesült Államok erre vonatkozó aggályait. Február 10-én közleményben tudattuk, hogy komoly aggodalomra ad okot a média sokszínűségének folyamatos felszámolása, a többi között az, hogy a Klubrádió frekvenciájának megvonásával Magyarországot egyik független hangjától fosztják meg. Számos magyar és nemzetközi szervezet osztja a mi álláspontunkat.

Nekünk is csalódást okozott a magyar médiatanácsa döntése arról, hogy március 12-én nem adott lehetőséget arra a Klubrádiónak, hogy ismét pályázhasson elveszített frekvenciájára – írja a külügyi szóvivő. Tavalyi emberi jogi jelentésünkben külön kitértünk arra, hogy elfogadhatatlan a Magyarországon tapasztalt állami médiaközpontosítás, az újságírók fenyegetettsége és a sajtó-, valamint a szólásszabadságot egyre jobban korlátozó törvények elfogadása – írja a Klubrádióhoz eljuttatott közleményében az amerikai külügyi tárca szóvivője.

The Biden-Harris Administration is restoring democracy and human rights to the center of U.S. foreign policy.  As Secretary Blinken said at NATO headquarters last month: „We have to hold one another to the values at the heart of our alliances – to confront the democratic recession around the world.  We all must speak up when countries backslide from democracy and human rights.  That’s what democracies do: we deal with challenges out in the open.  We also must help those countries move back in the right direction, by strengthening the guardrails of democracy – like a free and independent press; anti-corruption bodies; and institutions that protect the rule of law.”

The United States considers freedom of expression, including media freedom, to be a critical component of a vibrant, functioning democracy.  Peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive societies depend on the free flow of information and ideas, including the freedom to seek, receive, and impart information.  

As part of our dialogue with Hungarian officials, we raise concerns related to democratic institutions, human rights, and Hungary’s international commitments. The United States has also made its concerns public.  We noted on February 10 our deep concern about declining media pluralism in Hungary, and that the loss of Klubradio’s operating license threatened to deprive Hungary of an independent voice. Many Hungarians and international press freedom advocates also share these concerns.

On March 12, we expressed our disappointment in the Hungarian Media Council’s March 11 rejection of Klubradio’s bid to reapply for a broadcast frequency. This confirmed the loss of another independent voice from Hungarian airwaves.

Finally, the 2020 Human Rights Report on Hungary, released on March 30, addresses concerns about media concentration, intimidation of journalists, and legislation that could be used to restrict free speech.
